Atractylodes macrocephala, a perennial herb of the genus Atractylodes in the family Asteraceae, holds an important position in traditional Chinese medicine. In the "Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica", Atractylodes macrocephala is described as a medicinal plant with multiple functions such as strengthening the spleen and stomach, eliminating edema, and enhancing immunity. The rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, after being dried and ground in the sun, is the main component for making traditional Chinese medicine. Since the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Atractylodes and Atractylodes were clearly distinguished and further classified in the Song Dynasty.

The underground roots of Atractylodes macrocephala are thick and grayish-yellow. The leaves are concentrated in the middle and lower parts of the stem, 3 to 5 pinnate and fully lobed, papery, green, with fine spines along the edges. The inflorescence is capitulum and solitary at the top of the stem. The bracts are arranged in a covered tile pattern, and the small flowers are purplish red. The fruit is inverted conical, densely covered with white hairs, and the crown hairs are feather-like. The flowering and fruiting period is from August to October.

Atractylodes macrocephala was originally a wild variety, mainly distributed in the southern regions of Zhejiang and Anhui.
