Product Description
Naturally Sun-Dried Solomon's Seal
High-quality natural cultivation Polygonatum Odoratum, also known as Solomon's Seal, is a refreshing and healthy ingredient with both medicinal and culinary applications.
Plant Characteristics
Polygonatum odoratum, also known as "tail ginseng," "ground pipe," "bell vegetable," or "wei Rui," is a perennial herb of the Asparagaceae family and Polygonatum genus. The rhizome is cylindrical with a diameter of 5 to 14 millimeters. The plant grows 20 to 50 centimeters tall with alternate, elliptical to ovate-oblong leaves. Inflorescences produce 1 to 4 flowers (up to 8 in cultivation) with yellowish-green to white perianth and relatively straight perianth tubes. The plant flowers from May to June and bears blue-black berries with 7 to 9 seeds from July to September.
Growing Conditions & Distribution
Polygonatum odoratum thrives in low mountains, hills, or valleys at altitudes of 500 to 3,000 meters. It prefers slightly acidic, loose sandy yellow soil with good drainage and a pH value of 5.5 to 6.0. The plant favors shaded, moist environments but is sensitive to waterlogging. Widely distributed across temperate zones of Eurasia, it grows naturally under forests and on shady mountain slopes. In China, genuine varieties are cultivated in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Ningxia, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Guangdong, and other provinces.
Medicinal Properties & Benefits
Efficacy and Function
- Nourishing Yin and Moistening Dryness: Yuzhu is sweet and moist, slightly cold in nature, and effective at nourishing lung and stomach yin. It alleviates symptoms of yin deficiency including dry throat, dry skin, and constipation, particularly beneficial during dry seasons or post-illness recovery.
- Promote Saliva Production and Quench Thirst: Stimulates saliva secretion and improves appetite loss caused by insufficient stomach yin. Helps manage thirst symptoms associated with conditions like diabetes.
- Moistening the Lungs and Relieving Cough: Provides soothing relief for dry coughs with little or no phlegm. Often combined with sand ginseng and ophiopogon japonicus for chronic bronchitis and pulmonary tuberculosis characterized by lung yin deficiency.
- Enhance Immunity: Modern research indicates Polygonatum odoratum polysaccharides possess antioxidant and immune-regulating properties, assisting in recovery from physical weakness and post-illness fatigue.
Main Indications
- Dry Cough Due to Lung Dryness: Dry cough with little phlegm, dry and sore throat, often used with Adenophora and Fritillaria
- Deficiency of Stomach Yin: Dry mouth and throat, decreased appetite, typically combined with Dendrobium and Ophiopogon japonicus
- Internal Heat and Thirst: Used for diabetes or excessive thirst caused by body fluid depletion after high fever
- Yin Deficiency and Exogenous Infection: Combined with peppermint and fermented soybeans to alleviate cold symptoms in individuals with yin deficiency constitution
Usage Notes
- Use with Caution: Yuzhu is slightly cold in nature and not suitable for individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, diarrhea, intolerance to cold, or white and greasy tongue coating.
- Compatibility Contraindications: Avoid concurrent use with antihypertensive drugs as it may enhance efficacy and lead to hypotension. Follow specific medical guidance from healthcare professionals.
- Medicinal and Edible Applications: Can be used to make congee (Yuzhu glutinous rice congee), brewed into tea (with goji berries and honey), or added to stews. Recommended daily dosage is 10-15 grams.
Yuzhu is mild in nature, but usage should be adjusted according to individual constitution and symptoms. For therapeutic applications, consult with a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for proper syndrome differentiation and avoid long-term, large-scale self-administration.
